More Snow Needed Before Snowmobile Trails can be Used

Snowmobile trails in Minnesota officially open on December 1 but more snow is needed before they can be used.

The DNR reports that the ground and must be frozen and a minimum of 12 inches of snow is required before the trails can be groomed.

Even after there is enough snow to use the trails, the DNR warns riders to be careful as trails may have debris across them, unfrozen swamps, rocks, or standing crops.

There are around 22,000 miles of snowmobile trails in the State of Minnesota. Nearly 21,000 miles of those trails are maintained by local snowmobile clubs.

Snow depth and trail conditions are reported on the DNR website.
