The Dragons season came to an end yesterday at the hands of Eveleth-Gilbert.
Pine City started the season with four straight wins, but would lose a pitching dual double header to Braham. They would go 3-3 in their next six games. They then went on a five game winning streak to end the regular season, it started with a win over Hinckley-Finlayson. Pine City ended the regular season at home with a win over 2019's state champion in class AA, Duluth Marshall. The Dragons headed into the playoffs with lots of momentum. They would win their first round match against Mora 6-1, a team who had booted them out of the playoffs many times before. Then Pine City faced Virginia. This was a tough game for the Dragons as they were able to score only one run, while allowing 12. This game ended after 5 innings, sending the Dragons to the elimination bracket. They would come back two days later to grab a slim win over Greenway 6-5. The team then had to sit and await the winner of Virginia and Aitkin. The Gobblers won that game in 5 innings 13-2 over Virginia. Pine City would get a rematch against the Blue Devils. The Dragons got revenge and moved on after a 8-3 win. They would then face off against Eveleth-Gilbert a team they had lost to during the regular season. Pine City held a 7-2 lead going into the 5 inning. After that inning the Dragons grabbed one more run but saw their lead shrink down to 8-5. The 6th inning saw the Golden Bears inch even closer, scoring two runs and holding Pine City off the board. The top of the 7th inning saw Eveleth-Gilbert score three runs to take a 10-8 lead. The Dragons wouldn't go down quietly, they were able to get the winning run up to bat with two outs. Unfortunately, the third out was made and the Dragons season came to an end.
The Dragons enjoyed a very good season. It was the best season in recent memory. Records go back to the 2005 season, and this was the first season the Dragons have made it past the first round of the playoffs.
