East Central hosted Aitkin on Tuesday night.
The Eagles came into the night having gotten off to a hot start on the season, sporting a 7-2 record. They were playing an Aitkin squad that had seen very limited action up to this point.
As the game began the Gobblers got the first point on the board. But then they scored again, and again, and even some more. Taking an 8-0 lead in the first set. So the Eagles were forced to take a timeout and refocus. And my goodness did the timeout ever prove to be the turning point. After it they scored their first points of the game. And it didn't take long before they had taken the lead from Aitkin. Late in the set the Eagles held a solid 5 point lead and look to run away with the opening set. But Aitkin made it a battle. The Eagles though wouldn't let the lead slip away and eventually came out victorious 25-21.
Set two had a much better start for the Eagles as they scored first. Early on in the set neither team was able to swing momentum fully in their favor. It was a back and forth set and this continued till late in the set. The Eagles were able to take advantage of a few Gobbler mistakes and pull away taking the second set 25-18.
The third set again started with the Eagles scoring first, but once again it turned into a battle. The teams would seemingly trade points and the lead. But as the set wore on the Eagles senior leadership took control and helped their team pull away. They won the third set 25-16 and the match 3-0.
The Eagles improve to 8-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. They currently sit at the top of the section. They will play one of the top two teams in the conference on Thursday in Mille Lacs, with that game being play at Isle High School.
