The Pine City Dragons hosted the #2 team in the state, Sauk Centre last night.
In a game which could’ve been a preview of the Section 6AA championship game, the Dragons gymnasium was packed to its capacity. The game was not the usual fast pace the Dragons are used to. Both defenses showed why their teams are top 10 in the state. These two teams traded the lead almost throughout the entire 1st half. The Mainstreeters found momentum and took the lead. But Lily Wilson helped the Dragons escape that small deficit late in the 1st half. The teams went into halftime tied at 19. Coming out into the 2nd half, Pine City seemed to shift momentum to their side. They drained a couple three’s and took the lead. But Sauk Centre came storming back to regain the lead. The Mainstreeters held a 10 point lead halfway through the final half. The Dragons had a resurgence on offense to drop the 10 point deficit to 2. Sauk Centre then went on another run and were up 10 again late in the 2nd half. Pine City managed to close the gap down to 4. With under 10 seconds left the Dragons trailed by 3. Lily Wilson grabbed the pass up court but couldn’t pass the ball quick enough before she was fouled with 1 second left. Wilson missed the first then purposely missed the second free throw hoping for a long rebound and one final chance to tie the game. Unfortunately, Sauk Centre would grab the rebound and the victory 49-46. Leading the way for the Pine City was Sophie Lahti with 15 points followed by Lily Wilson with 14 and Ashley Faur with 10.
The Dragons dropped only their second game on the year and finish the season at 24-2. Pine City will be the #3 seed in the Section 6AA playoffs, and will host Rush City on Thursday night.
Congratulations Pine City on a great season and good luck in the playoffs!
