Lady Dragons Win Conference Game Over Hinckley-Finlayson

Pine City hosted Hinckley-Finlayson on Thursday night.

Both teams looked to get back into the win column. The Jags got on the board first with a couple trips to the free throw line. Pine City then turned things around going on a 17-0 run. Their offense was able to set the pace of the game during that run, their defense also helped with some turnovers which were turned into points. The Jags offense did a good job of moving the ball and finding open shots, but were just unable to get the shots to fall, although they were able to give themselves 2nd and 3rd chance opportunities. Pine City was able to keep their lead at or around 20 points for much of the 1st half. They were also getting the perimeter shots to fall, hitting five 3's in the 1st half. The Dragons looked to be headed towards a half of dominance and extending their lead. But the Jags defense did a good job of slowing their offense down some, and their own offense was able to get things going in transition. H-F was able to finish the half on a strong note, while not holding Pine City scoreless, they did a good job of forcing shots which they rebounded and quickly turned into points. The Dragons still lead at half 41-26, but the Jags had swung momentum in their favor.

The Jags used that momentum from the end of the 1st half to begin the 2nd half on an 8-0 run. And all of a sudden they cut their deficit down to single digits. They looked bound to complete the comeback and try and take their first lead since the beginning of the game. Pine City was forced to call a timeout to try and halt the Jags run. This proved to be a key timeout as the Dragons flipped a switch and put the game back in their favor. Whether it was turnovers, rebounds, blocks, shots from inside or outside it all seemed to be going their way. It started with the defense again creating turnovers, and the offense didn't miss a beat creating points off of the takeaways. They continued to keep the pressure on and eventually extended their lead to 20 points. The run continued and they stretched their lead out to 30 points before the Jags could stop them. Down by 30 H-F could've easily hung their heads and gave up, in fact they did quite the opposite, they continued to battle and put forth every ounce of effort. But it was Pine City who would come out on top winning 79-46.

Pine City moves to 6-5 on the season and 3-1 in conference play.

The Jags now sit at 3-8 but they have proved to be a tough team that can stick with anyone they play.
