DOC Investigating after Inmate Dies at MCF Rush City

Authorities are investigating after a 26-year-old inmate of the Rush City correctional facility died in a cell.


According to the Department of Corrections, Derrick Catchings was found unresponsive in his cell on Wednesday, July 20, around 7:00 p.m. Upon discovery, DOC Security and Health Services staff rendered emergency life-saving measures, and outside Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were requested and responded to the facility.


Catchings was pronounced dead by EMS about 30 minutes after being found.


The Midwest Medical Examiner’s office will be conducting an autopsy of Catchings to determine his cause of death.


He has been an inmate at Rush City since 2013.


The investigation into Catching's death is ongoing.
