Dragons Win First of Two Games on Homecoming Week

Pine City hosted East Central on Tuesday night.

The Dragons and Eagles battled in a Great River Conference matchup.

The Eagles came in looking for their first conference win on the year, while Pine City looked for their 2nd win of the week. The first set was a fight from start to finish. Neither team could pull ahead by more than two points. The teams continued to trade the lead and retie the game, until late in the set East Central gained a 2 point advantage 21-19. After a Dragon timeout that lead was quickly nullified as Pine City scored 5 unanswered points to pull ahead 24-21. The Eagles managed to score two points before the Dragons closed out the set with the win 25-23. The 2nd set was vastly different from the first. Pine City scored first and continued to score at will and dominated the set winning 25-8.

Things were looking as if it was all falling into place for Pine City to sweep the match, but the Eagles are not a team that will give in. The Eagles came out and turned the tables on Pine City, leading by as much as 8 in the set. The Dragons closed the gap but the Eagles were able to use the momentum they gained and closed out the set victory 25-22.

The 4th set was close in the early stages but sooner than later Pine City gained their mojo back and pulled away to win the set 25-13 and the match 3-1.

Pine City improves to 12-7 on the season and 5-1 in the conference and sit tied for 2nd with Mille Lacs. The Dragons will wrap up their week of play on Thursday as they welcome in the Bombers of Braham.

East Central will continue to look for their first conference win, but with how this team battles it won't be long. They won't play again until Monday when they travel to Ogilvie to play the Lions.
