New Funding Awarded to Pine City and Mora Schools Through 2019

Pine City State Representative Jason Rarick released info on what was accomplished for local schools funding-wise in 2017.

Pine County schools received new funding for this year, including $717,000 for Pine City Schools, and $480,000 for the Hinckley-Finlayson school district.

From the release:

"More than $1.3 billion in new funding was allocated to schools statewide. Locally, this translated into significant new revenue for our schools through Fiscal Year 2019. Under the new law, the Pine City School District will receive a $717,000 increase, Hinckley-Finlayson School District will see $480,000, East Central gains $385,000, Mora will receive $735,000, and Willow River tallies $206,000."

He also spoke on reforms for the teacher licensure system to help hire more teachers to address the shortage.

As a final reminder for back to school updates, Rarick let families know to save receipts from school supplies, as Minnesota has both a credit and a subtraction for education expenses

PC Beach Closed for the year

After a summer of high use and recreation, the west side beach in Pine City has closed for the year.

While technically still open, the beach will not be staffed by lifeguards going forward for the rest of the season.

Pine City reminded its residents to use the fishing pier for fishing and not the shore, due to the danger of losing hooks in the swimming area and the dangers that would present to swimmers.

Kanabec County Public Transportation Receives Grant

Relief could be on its way to improve transportation access for Kanabec County Residents.

Timber Trails Public Transit in Kanabec County was among 10 other communities chosen for a transportation community initiative grant.

The first step in that process is to hold an event to plan the increase in transportation access.

The issue in transportation in Kanabec and other rural areas is brought about by low population density.

WCMP will update this story as new information comes to light.
