A 41-year-old Cambridge man was charged last week with one count of criminal vehicular homicide, six felony-level counts of criminal vehicular operation, and DWI in a July 2 crash that resulted in a fatality in Pine County.
According to the criminal complaint, multiple law enforcement agencies were dispatched to a serious two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 48 and Wildlife Road.
Kameron Ellis, a 63-year-old Hinckley resident, was pronounced deceased at the scene. It was later confirmed there were no drugs or alcohol in his system.
The driver of the other vehicle was identified as Cambridge resident Cory Olson. The complaint states that Olson and two juveniles were extricated from the truck, and that none of them were wearing a seatbelt.
A juvenile victim was also located in the grass near Olson's vehicle. Olson and three juveniles — who were in critical condition with numerous injuries — were transported to the hospital by Life Link Air Care.
Multiple witnesses confirmed that Olson's vehicle approached Wildlife Road at a high rate of speed, and didn't make an attempt to stop at the stop sign before proceeding into the intersection and making contact with Ellis' truck.
Olson's vehicle was equipped with an ignition interlock device, and a search warrant was obtained for a blood sample from Olson. The BCA determined the sample contained methamphetamine and amphetamine, as well as two types of THC.
He had previously been convicted of DWI in May 2021 and July 2020, and had multiple prior citations for speeding and violating seat belt requirements.
Three of the criminal vehicular operation charges are for great bodily harm, which carry a maximum sentence of five years, and three are for substantial bodily harm, which have a three-year maximum.
