Dragons Start Year with Four Straight Wins

Pine City 61

Rush City 42

The Dragons found the sledding a little tougher in this one as the Tigers were ready to play. "Anytime rivals get together, you never can predict how the game will go." It looked as though Pine City was on its way to a blowout win as they jumped out to a 24-9 lead. "The kids had some great plays to start the game especially in transition." Rush City did not go away and cut the lead to 25-20 with a few minutes left in the half. In the second half the Dragons were able to break the game open a bit and were able to come away with the victory. "Coach Keller does a great job with the kids in Rush City, so we were happy to get the conference and section win." Ellie Hasz had 22 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists. Sophie Lahti had a double double with 20 points 12 rebounds and 5 assists. Karly Jusczak had 9 points, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Kloey lind had 5 points and 7 rebounds. Meredith Kolling had 3 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks, Ella Sell had 2 points, Maddie Berglund had 4 assists and Carissa Nascene had 3 rebounds and 3 steals. "Rush City was able to expose a few weaknesses that we need to shore up. Those are things that you want teams to do to you early in the season so that those things can be worked on and improved upon."

The game was very entertaining for fans with a lot of action and transitions baskets. "The girls showed how versatile they are on the offensive end of the floor by scoring in many different ways and with our whole roster of players contributing." A team will win most if not all of the time when they put up 92 points but the Dragons are not yet where they want to defensively. "We definitely have some things that we are working on on the defensive end. They are not major things, but some little things that will make it much tougher for their opponents. The game followed two very similar halves with the Dragons going on a couple of big runs in each half. Pine City built a 48-31 half time lead and were able to stretch the lead to over 30 points at times in the second half. Sophie Lahti had her first 30 point game of her career to go along with a great floor game. Sophie scored 30 points and had 9 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals and 0 turnovers. Ellie Hasz had 23 points, 4 assists and 4 steals. Meredith Kolling had 12 points and 5 rebounds. Karly Jusczak had 10 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Kloey Lind had 9 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Maddie Berglund had 6 points and 5 assists.

"We are getting great contributions from all 8 of our varsity players. They are learning their roles and are beginning to see what we can become." The Dragons have a big week next week as they face two teams that are also undefeated, in Braham and Duluth Marshall. The Dragons are 4-0 on the season.
