Four correctional officers at the Rush City correctional facility were injured after an attack by an incarcerated individual on Saturday afternoon.
According to a news release from the Minnesota Department of Corrections, facility staff encountered an incarcerated individual who was suspected of possessing homemade alcohol during routine cell searches.
When officers approached, the individual attacked them with a makeshift weapon.
One officer sustained a puncture wound and was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Three others, who subdued and restrained the individual, were evaluated and released from the hospital.
The facility was placed on lockdown following the assault, and the responsible party is being transferred to a maximum-security facility in Oak Park Heights.
The incarcerated man is currently serving a life sentence for first-degree murder.
The incident is under investigation, and the case will be referred to the Chisago County Attorney's Office for consideration of felony assault charges.
