Pine City hosted Rush City on Tuesday night for a rivalry game to start the volleyball season.
Of course both teams had already played four games before this one. But that was in a tournament setting, this was a true dual matchup.
In the first set the Dragons used home court advantage to get out to an early lead. The Tigers would not be outdone for long as they quickly tied the set. Each team had held a 3 point lead, until the halfway point, that's when Rush City began to pull away. While the Tigers did give up some points, it was their ability to score multiple times in a row, while Pine City could not. The Tigers took set 1 25-13.
The second set was a dominate one for Rush City. They got out to an early lead and never really looked back. Unfortunately for Pine City the mistakes piled up and they couldn't seem to over come them. The Tigers won set 2 25-8.
When the third set began you could feel a different energy on the side of the Dragons. They were able to get out to an early lead, but the Tigers once again tied it. Both sides would continue to trade the lead and keep pace with one another. Pine City was putting together their best set yet, the seniors played a big part in helping keep their team uplifted and focused. Rush City seniors also stepped up and made some big hits, which ultimately lead to them pulling away late and getting the set win 25-16 and match victory 3-0.
Despite the loss the Dragons have to feel good with where their team is headed. They showed a ton of resilience and effort. They'll not play again until next Tuesday at Proctor.
For Rush City it's a 5-0 start to the season and an early win in the conference. They too will wait until next Tuesday to play, when they host Chisago Lakes.
