Mikal Anton, a detective for the Burnett County Sheriff's Office, announced his candidacy for sheriff in the upcoming 2026 election on Sunday.
Anton has worked for the Burnett County Sheriff's Office since starting as a deputy in 2001.
He was promoted to detective in 2019, with a focus on narcotics-related investigations.
Anton's announcement reads in part: "As both a member of the Sheriff’s Office and the community, I see firsthand the challenges we face, including mental health crises, crimes against children and the elderly, substance abuse, and other sensitive and complex cases. If elected Sheriff, I will address these issues through education, up-to-date training, strong investigative practices, and a proactive, collaborative approach."
Sheriff Tracy Finch, who was elected to the position in 2018, will retire at the end of her term and is not seeking reelection.
Finch has endorsed Anton's candidacy, stating: "I am excited to support Mikal Anton as our next Burnett County Sheriff. Mikal is a strong leader and an even better person. I am extremely proud of him for taking this next step in his career!"
Anton is seeking election on the Republican ticket. His full announcement is available to read here.
