A bat has tested positive for rabies in Burnett County for the first time since 2022.
According to a press release from the Burnett County public health department, the suspected bat was submitted for testing after a possible encounter with vaccinated pets.
The last case of human rabies in Wisconsin was in 2010; the disease was acquired from an infected bat.
County residents are advised to not handle wild animals, check pets’ vaccination histories, and to report any exposure to bats.
