“We knew we had to roll the dice a little bit.” Braham girls basketball coach, Zach Loy, called a timeout with his team down 37-20 with 8:35 left to go in their subsection championship to Great River Conference rival, Ogilvie. “We had to do something to kind of turn the game on it’s head.” The Bombers put on the full court press that fueled the 23-3 run to close out the game and return to the section championship.
The Lions were daring Braham sophomore Nickole Duvernay to shoot from the perimeter all night. Up until late in the ballgame, she was 0-2 from the outside and didn’t feel comfortable shooting from three-point range. She then started a run of 19 straight points from the Bombers with a straight away three from the top of the key. “We finally saw the ball go through the hoop a couple times and it carried over” Loy said of the run. Senior Lacy Cuda completed the comeback with a layup with under 4:00 left on the clock. The reliable defense for Braham carried them the rest of the way. The Bombers are allowing under 30 points a game in the section playoffs.
Braham needed a team effort to get past Ogilvie. Getting 13 from Madison Davis and 11 from Duvernay and Arin Zimple.
Ogilvie also had some great performances. Getting 13 from Grace Heins, 12 from Kadence Pierce, and 11 from Ailee Fratzke.
Both student sections were in full force. And the crowd was just about full in the neutral site of Hinckley-Finlayson. When asked about the Bomber student section, Coach Loy said, They had a lot of fun tonight. They brought a ton of energy. I hope they show up for us on Friday night in Little Falls.”
Braham will be playing for the Section 5A crown on Friday Night In Little Falls against the 18-8 Nevis Tigers. Nevis upset Belgrade Brooten Elrosa on Wednesday 48-47 to move on in the bracket. That game will be at 7:00.
