The Burnett County Sheriff’s Office will honor a 12-year-old boy who saved his father’s life in a bear attack at a ceremony on Saturday.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Owen Beierman shot and killed a black bear that attacked his dad, 43-year-old Ryan Beierman, on Sept. 6.

According to the Associated Press, Owen had previously wounded the bear with a shot from a tree stand.

When tracking the bear, it charged from about six feet away and attacked Ryan, who was bitten and clawed, Burnett County Sheriff Tracy Finch said.

Finch said the ceremony will be held at Coyland Creek at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

"He's a very brave young man," Finch said of Owen. "His father was getting bitten and clawed by a bear, and he was able to do what he had to do to save his father's life. I'm very proud of little Owen, and I think he deserves an award."

The bear attack occurred east of Siren.
