The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is accepting comments on the final Environmental Impact Statement for the Grindstone River Dam project in Hinckley.
Currently, the DNR is proposing the removal of the dam, which would result in the loss of a 26.6-acre Grindstone Reservoir.
The dam is currently in poor condition, and the DNR is looking to remove the dam to mitigate safety hazards, remove a barrier to the movement of wildlife, and allow for natural sediment transport and greater habitat diversity.
These final comments follow a review of the draft EIS. The DNR is now focused on the adequacy of the final Environmental Impact Statement.
They are looking for questions that address the following questions:
whether the potentially significant issues outlined in scoping were addressed,
whether the Minnesota DNR responded to all substantive comments, and
whether the document was prepared in accordance with state environmental review rules.
A copy of the final EIS is available on the project page of the DNR website.
Mailed comments should be sent to the attention of Becky Horton, EAW project manager, Ecological and Water Resources Division, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, 500 Lafayette Road N, St. Paul, MN 55155.
Email comments should be sent to environmentalrev.dnr@state.mn.us with “Grindstone EIS” in the subject line.
Final comments must be sent in before 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 9.
