East Central and Pine City Share Great River Conference Title

The Dragon boys basketball team needed three straight wins to grab a share of the Great River Conference title.

In there first game of the week, Pine City traveled to Braham to take on the Bombers. The Dragons came out a tad slow and the Bombers capitalized on that and took a 28-23 lead going into halftime. In the 1st half the Bombers didn't allow a single three point to be made by the Dragons. Braham had suffocated Pine City on offense and was looking to do the same in the 2nd half. But Pine City had other plans. The Dragons found their rhythm and never looked back. Braham kept pace but the Dragons came out on top 57-52.

In their second game of the week Pine City hosted East Central. The Eagles handed the Dragons their first loss on the season just weeks before. The Dragons needed to win this game if they wanted to keep their hopes alive of at least grabbing a share of the conference title. The Dragons got out to an early 13-0 lead over the Eagles, and it looked like Pine City was going to run away with the win. Though East Central closed the gap Pine City kept adding to the lead. As the 1st half was winding down the Dragons held a 29-15 lead, but that's when the Eagles caught fire. To close out the 1st half the Eagles went on a 17-6 run, and were down 35-32. At the start of the 2nd half it was a back and forth game, neither team able to grab momentum. Late, East Central trailed 56-52, but like the Eagles in the 1st half, this is when Pine City took off. They went on a 17-3 run and with little time left this proved to be too much for the Eagles to overcome. The Dragons got the win 73-55.

In their final game of the week the Dragons took on rival Rush City. The 1st half was a back and forth half, though the Dragons held the lead for most of that time. Pine City held a 37-28 lead but the Tigers went 14-4 run to end the half, giving them momentum for the start of the 2nd. And that's exactly what happened, Rush City worked back to bring themselves within two points of the Dragon lead. From that point on when one team scored the other answered with a score of their own. Throughout this back and forth, the Dragons were able to stop the Tigers a few times on offense and build on their lead. Nearing the end Rush City had no choice but to foul and send Pine City to the free throw line. The Dragons would come out on top 71-62.

With the win the Dragons grabbed a share of the Great River Conference title with East Central.
