Grand jury indicts Cambridge man in fatal shooting at Hinckley hunting cabin

A Cambridge man was indicted by a grand jury on Wednesday in the shooting death of his father at a hunting cabin in Hinckley last November.

Kirk Hazlett was charged with one count each of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and first-degree burglary, and two counts of kidnapping.

According to the criminal complaint, Pine County deputies were dispatched to a report of a shooting in Hinckley at about 8:45 p.m. on Nov. 15.

The report stated that Kirk Hazlett allegedly shot his father in the head with a handgun.

Law enforcement was directed by two witnesses, Hazlett's uncle and another man, to a hunting cabin where the shooting occurred, located on the 57000 block of Barns Spring Road.

The deceased victim was discovered in the cabin, near several casings of ammunition. Investigators determined he was shot nine times.

The victim's brother told deputies he was at the hunting cabin with the victim and another witness when he received a notification from a trail camera of a person walking up the driveway with a gun.

When he went to retrieve a handgun, the side door of the cabin opened and he heard three shots.

Hazlett allegedly told the two men to sit on the couch before shooting his father again in the back of the head to make sure he was dead.

The second witness said Hazlett "entered with a mission ... to kill him."

The victim's brother said Hazlett was "not in good relations with their family."

After pleading to leave, Hazlett asked for the two men's phones and allowed them to exit the cabin.

The criminal complaint states that Hazlett contacted Isanti County authorities at about 9:18 p.m. to report that his girlfriend was making suicidal comments.

Hazlett's location was approximately 8 miles southwest of the hunting cabin.

He was later located at his residence in Cambridge, arrested, and transported to the Pine County Jail.

Law enforcement had been called to the hunting cabin previously on Oct. 17 for a disturbance between Hazlett and his father, after Hazlett trespassed on the property.

Hazlett will make his next court appearance on April 7.
