Group Calls for Justice during Pine County Board Meeting

Updated: Dec 5, 2020

A group calling for justice for the man who was shot and killed by a Pine County Sheriff's Deputy made their voices heard during the most recent Pine County board meeting.

Anthony Legato, 25, was shot and killed following a call regarding a domestic incident at the Hinckley Grand Casino on October 9.

Around seven people called into the December 1 meeting, all asking for the same things - Release the body camera footage to Anthony's family, and to fire and prosecute Deputy Joshua Pepin.

A Facebook page, "Justice for Anthony Legato," has gained 400 likes since it was created in late November. It serves as a place for supporters to organize their efforts.

Among the callers were Michelle Gross, a woman who said she was the president of the organization Communities United Against Police Brutality and was working with the family, and Legato's sister.

One person did speak in favor of Pine County law enforcement during the open forum section.

"I think the dangerous actions of someone driving the wrong direction on the freeway put so many lives in danger," said Aileen Croup. "I think our deputies did what they need to do at the time."

The Pine County Sheriff’s Office declined to comment on the case as it is still being investigated by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
