Hinckley-Finlayson school board accepts superintendent's resignation

The Hinckley-Finlayson school board accepted the resignation of Superintendent Brian Masterson — effective June 30, 2026 — at a special meeting on Monday.

Masterson submitted his formal resignation in a letter to the board on Dec. 19.

He served as the district's superintendent for the past four years, after previously serving as high school principal for 11 years.

The board voted to move forward with a full superintendent search at Monday's meeting.

The resignation letter reads:

"After much reflection and with mixed emotions, I am submitting my formal resignation as Superintendent of Hinckley-Finlayson School District, effective June 30, 2026.

It has been a tremendous honor to serve this district for the past 15 years — first as High School Principal for 11 years, and then for the past 4 years as Superintendent. This community has been my professional home, and I am deeply grateful for the trust, collaboration, and support I have received from our board members, staff, students, families, and community partners.

Together, we have accomplished a great deal. I am proud of the progress we have made and I am confident that the district is well positioned for continued success.

While this decision was not an easy one, I believe it is the right time — for both me and the district — for new leadership to bring fresh perspectives and energy to the work ahead. I remain committed to ensuring a smooth transition and will do all I can to support the board and administrative team during this period.

I will leave with deep gratitude for the relationships and experiences that have shaped me, both personally and professionally. Thank you for the privilege of serving this district and community."
