MSHSL Approves NIL for High School Athletes

Some big news is coming for student-athletes in Minnesota.

The Minnesota State High School League's Board of Directors has approved a new policy for student-athletes to be compensated for use of their name, image and likeness.

Though the MSHSL has approved this policy they have also set up some strict rules athletes must follow:

They cannot paid based on their game performance or have incentives to be paid.

They cannot be paid to attend a particular school or stay at their current school(recruited).

The school they attend cannot provide compensation nor an agent of the school.

A student-athlete may not miss school or any academic obligations to participate in NIL activities.

The student-athlete may not miss any practices, games, or any other team obligations to participate in NIL activities.

The league also bans students from using school logos, uniforms, names, or mascots. And if they must make sure no MSHSL logos or related mascots or involved.

Though there is a laundry list of things they cannot do, there's also plenty they can be compensated for.

They can be paid for officiating or coaching as long as they are not doing so as part of the school.

They can be compensated in non school related promotional activities, as well as promote the sale or use of a product or services.

They can be compensated for autographs as long as it is not after a school related activity.

So as long as the student-athlete is not representing the school or MSHSL in any way, or any illegal content they can be compensated for their NIL.
