East Central Minnesota sheriffs have added their voices to opposition of Minnesota House legislation concerning firearm and ammunition storage requirements.
Kanabec County Sheriff Brian Smith, Pine County Sheriff Jeff Nelson, Isanti County Sheriff Wayne Seiberlich, and Mille Lacs County Sheriff Kyle Burton are among the 14 sheriffs representing District 2 of the state sheriff’s association who signed their names to a letter opposing bill HF 396.
According to the bill, violating the safe storage statute could result in the ineligibility to possess a firearm, a locking device required to be included in each firearm transfer, and criminal penalties being imposed.
The sheriffs’ letter states that there is already a Minnesota law addressing negligent firearm storage, and that law enforcement response can be delayed due to the scope of rural counties.
The sheriffs are also seeking more focus and resources to address mental health issues and illegal drug-related activity in their counties.
