The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says the fall sharptail grouse hunting season will remain closed for 2021.
Each year, the sharp-tailed grouse advisory committee conducts a survey on grouse dancing grounds. Results of the survey show say population numbers are down 38% on unmanaged lands compared to those in 2019.
Although permits will not be issued this year, sharp-tailed grouse will stay a game species per Wisconsin state law.
The DNR says staff is hopeful that the population will respond positively to ongoing focused habitat management efforts.
