Woman fatally shot by police in North Branch

A woman was fatally shot by police officers in North Branch on Thursday night.

According to a press release from the North Branch Police Department, officers responded to the area of Third Avenue and Elm Street on a report of an intoxicated and suicidal woman at about 9:19 p.m.

The woman was armed with a handgun.

Officers located the woman, and one discharged non-lethal Pepperball. Another officer fired his department firearm, striking the woman.

Authorities rendered medical aid, but the woman died as a result of her injuries.

The incident is under investigation by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Body cameras recorded the incident.

The involved officers are on standard critical incident leave.

More information will be released pending further investigation.
