Pine City hosted conference foe Ogilvie last night.
Both the Lady Dragons and Lions were coming into this game on win streaks. The Dragons was up to 11 and the Lions at 5, but both put those on the line in this game. These two teams also came in fighting for the top spot in the Great River Conference.
The Dragons came out firing quickly getting out to a 14-4 lead, and soon turned that into a 21-9 lead. The Lions were able to make changes on the fly and went on a 8-2 run to cut the lead down to 6. But just as Ogilvie cut the lead down the Dragons built it back up. Pine City would take a 28-19 lead into halftime.
The 2nd half saw Pine City take momentum early and now seen their lead increase to 19. But this did not deter the Lions as they continued to fight hard and make plays on both sides of the court. Pine City continued to control the pace in the half and worked up to a 20 point lead. With 5 minutes left in the game, Ogilvie looked to make a run. Trailing by 20 their offense sparked a 10-3 run with under two and half minutes left. But as time was winding down the Lions were forced to start fouling, which sent the Dragons to the line. Pine City was able to capitalize on their free throws, and the lead was insurmountable. The Lions never lost their fight and did so till the final buzzer.
Pine City came away with the victory 67-54. With the win their streak now moves up to 12 and are 15-3 on the season. They remain undefeated in conference play. They will play Mille Lacs tonight. On Saturday they will play against a familiar foe, Sauk Centre in Alexandria in the Breakdown Winter Lakes Classic. Ogilvie falls to 11-5 on the year and 6-2 in the conference. They will play North Lakes Academy tonight and host Braham on Friday.
