Tanks for the memories: Tank at Chisago County Fairgrounds relocated to Waverly

The tank that has been located at the Chisago County Fairgrounds in Rush City since 1998 has been moved to Waverly.

According to Chisago County Historical Society administrative manager Lora Tatinger, the north chapter of the historical society applied to be sponsors for the M60A3 battle tank in 1994.

The tank arrived at the fairgrounds from the Pine City Armory after being de-militarized and sealed in 1998.

The north chapter raised funds to create the concrete pad for the tank, which the U.S. Army retains ownership of. Tatinger said Rush City VFW Post 6692 donated and maintained the flag pole on display with the tank.

In 2023, the historical society’s board of directors discussed making arrangements to transfer the tank to a new organization due to maintenance and paperwork necessary to keep the tank in Rush City.

After about a year of discussions, the Rush City VFW determined it could not maintain the tank.

The tank was moved from the fairgrounds to Waverly last week.

"For 26 years, the North Chisago Historical Society prepared condition reports on the tank for the U.S. Army, and now another organization will do the honors," Tatinger wrote in an email. "It has welcomed people to Rush City for decades and will now do so in the Waverly Community."
